The Tower Card — Destruction as Clarity
The Tower does not destroy what was working. It destroys what was never as solid as it appeared. The difference matters more than you think.
When The Tower appears in a reading, people flinch. It is the card of sudden disruption, of structures collapsing, of the lightning strike that changes everything. What most readings miss is what the card is actually saying about the structure that fell.
What the Card Actually Shows
The Tower is struck by lightning. Two figures fall from its crown. The structure, which appeared solid, is revealed to be hollow — a monument to false certainty, built on a foundation that could not withstand the truth.
The lightning is not random. In the Rider-Waite tradition, the lightning bolt is the flash of divine truth — the sudden illumination that reveals what has been hidden. The Tower does not fall because something external attacked it. It falls because the lightning showed what was always true about it.
This is the first and most important thing to understand about The Tower: it does not destroy what was real. It destroys what was false. The structures that survive a Tower moment are the ones that were actually solid. The ones that fall were never as strong as they appeared.
The Structures That Fall
Tower moments tend to target specific kinds of structures: the ones built on performance rather than substance, on appearance rather than reality, on what we wanted to be true rather than what was actually true.
The relationship that looked stable but was held together by avoidance rather than genuine connection. The career that looked successful but was built on external validation rather than internal alignment. The identity that looked confident but was maintained by constant performance rather than genuine self-knowledge.
When these structures fall, the experience is devastating. Not because something good was destroyed, but because something we had invested in — something we had built our sense of security around — is revealed to have been less solid than we believed.
The Clarity That Follows
The Tower is not the last card in the sequence. After The Tower comes The Star — the card of hope, of healing, of the quiet that follows the storm. The Tower clears the ground. The Star shows what can be built on it.
The clarity that follows a Tower moment is unlike any other kind of clarity. It is the clarity of someone who has had the false structures removed and can now see, for the first time, what was actually there all along. What was real. What was solid. What survived.
This clarity is a gift, even when it arrives in the form of devastation. It shows you what you actually have — not what you thought you had, not what you were performing having, but what is genuinely, durably yours.

When You Are In It
If you are in a Tower moment right now, the most useful thing I can offer is this: resist the urge to rebuild immediately. The instinct after a collapse is to reconstruct as quickly as possible — to restore the sense of stability, to fill the void, to return to something that feels like the before.
The Tower asks you to sit in the rubble long enough to understand what fell and why. To resist the temptation to rebuild the same structure in the same place. To use the clarity that the lightning brought to build something different — something that can actually hold the weight of who you are becoming.
This is hard. The rubble is uncomfortable. The void is frightening. But the void is also the space in which something genuinely new becomes possible — something that could not have been built while the old structure was still standing.
The Tower in Strategy
In organisational and strategic contexts, Tower moments are the disruptions that reveal which structures were actually load-bearing and which were decorative. The market shift that exposes which competitive advantages were real and which were temporary. The crisis that shows which relationships were genuine and which were transactional.
The organisations that navigate Tower moments most effectively are the ones that resist the urge to restore the pre-Tower state. That use the disruption as information — as a revelation of what was actually working and what was not — and build from that honest assessment.
The Tower is not a failure. It is a correction. The question is whether you are willing to receive the correction, or whether you will spend your energy trying to rebuild what the lightning already judged.
What Survives
After every Tower moment in my own life, I have found that what survived was more valuable than what fell. Not immediately — immediately, the loss is all I could feel. But over time, the clarity of what remained became the foundation for something more honest and more durable than what I had before.
The Tower does not take what is yours. It takes what was never as solid as it appeared. The difference, once you can see it, is everything.
